Together, in the spirit of inclusion, joy and play, WE DID IT!
In late December our project reached its Phase II fundraising goal of $350,000!
The seed was planted two years ago, as friends and family lovingly gave in November 2013 in memory of one young boy. The dream being that we would build a space where all could come together in play and in community, regardless of age or ability.
Two years later, after hundreds of donations and funds from lemonade stands, birthdays, holidays, bike-a-thons, climb-a-thons, little red pails and garage sales, we made that dream come true!
Today, we celebrate YOU! Our community of supporters who had the passion, faith, joy and generosity to make this happen. We celebrate all of the volunteers and donors who gave of their time and resources. And we are grateful for the many, many new, inspiring friends we made along the way.
We can't wait to play!!!
The Parks District is actively working at the playground site, weather permitting. Keep an eye out as they move into major phases of construction.
It's official! The Owen's Playground project has now transitioned to permanent fiscal sponsorship with the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation.
BIPF's vision statement: "Bainbridge Island will be a place of great parks, exceptional trails, vibrant green spaces and excellent recreational opportunities that connect our community."
BIPF Executive Director, Barb Trafton, BIPF Board President, Dana Webber, and the BIPF Board of Directors are a committed group of exceptional individuals who are passionate about outdoor recreation for all. Our team is incredibly grateful for their meaningful support of Owen's Playground.
What does this mean? All donations in support of Owen's Playground will come through the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation (checks should have a note in memo "Owen's Playground") which will be the organization with fiduciary responsibility for the playground project. BIPF will support the project in other meaningful ways. Once Phase II fundraising is complete, "Friends of Owen's Playground" will have a permanent home with BIPF, ensuring that endowment and maintenance funds are utilized to make improvements and necessary upgrades to the playground. All of this equates to longevity and stability for the island's first inclusive play space.
Our team, and the Owen Marshall family, extend a heartfelt thank you to Rotarian Tom Rees for his volunteer work on behalf of Owen's Playground the last year and a half, and to Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island for their fiscal sponsorship support since early 2014.

We are so excited to have Owen's Playground chosen as one of 105 wonderful, local agencies for the Red Envelope Campaign through Bainbridge Island One Call for All. Islanders, look for your envelope to arrive in early October and please consider giving to Owen's Playground in support of barrier-free, nature-inspired play!

This is why we build it...
For those new parents with tiny babies, little time and big demands, for those adults who have aging parents or children with complex needs, for those individuals who lack access to the trails and mountains due to compromised mobility or due to financial constraints which have left them without transportation, for those who cannot see or cannot hear, for those children, young adults and the aging who crave a space where they can access laughter, vibrant colors, and invigorating scents, sounds and textures, and for EVERYONE, we are building Owen's Playground.
As of this week, we have raised just over $230,000, close to 2/3 of the $360,000 needed to complete Owen's Playground which will bring barrier-free, nature-inspired play to Rotary Park on Bainbridge Island.
What you can do to help us reach our goal:
1. Download the donor path form at the donations page on this website. Choose a starfish, salmon or octopus to recognize your family or foundation's generous giving. These engraved metal insets will be placed in the main path that winds through the center of the playground. These make great holiday and birthday gifts!
2. Although most of the play pieces have been funded (!!), there are still a handful of fun pieces that need your support! These pieces have been thoughtfully chosen and will be joyfully received. We'd love to put YOUR name on them! Email us at email@example.com for more information.
3. Spread the word! Share this website! Tell your friends and family!
Thank you for your continued support!
Many of you have asked in the months since the September Phase I groundbreaking, how you might help with the playground. After four months of thoughtful preparation for Phase II, we now have those opportunities, including an easy way to sign-up to become involved with events in 2015.
As we gear up for Phase II fundraising and outreach, there are numerous volunteer positions for the Bainbridge Island Farmer's Market, on the 4th of July, at the North Kitsap Options Talent Show, with our Pennies for a Playground fundraiser, for our Movie for Play! event and more.
Thank you for your continued support of our project! We're excited to update you on what our team has been up to these last few months!
Phase I Construction
Our Phase I groundbreaking event in late September was a wonderful celebration of what the future holds for barrier-free play in our community. Thank you to all who attended and who made this event a momentous one.
A number of delays have pushed the timeline for the start of construction of Phase I of the playground out to later this Spring. Bainbridge Island Park & Metropolitan District, which is serving as the general contractor for the project, plans to start work on the West surfacing sometime in June, with the rest of Phase I (West side of the playground, closest to Weaver Avenue) following shortly after.
Phase II Fundraising
Our fundraising team has been hard at work the last three months on the design and development of our donor catalog which beautifully outlines each component of the playground and which will serve as our main outreach and fundraising tool for our Phase II fundraising efforts. We will formally kick-off this phase of fundraising this May - stay tuned for details!

In conjunction with the development of this catalog, Chris Cain, landscape architect and Project Manager for Owen's Playground, has produced a colorful sketch that illustrates the main features of the playground.
Lastly, in anticipation of a few community events we are planning for 2015, we are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join our team and take the lead in the following roles:
Each of these roles will be heavily supported by our experienced team who are familiar with the playground! If you are interested in helping us to work towards the goal of barrier-free play, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org!
Thank you to those volunteers who have recently committed to organizing our "Pennies for a Playground" fundraiser, our "Night of Play," and the Climb-A-Thon at Island Rock Gym. We look forward to having fun this year while working towards our goal of accessible play for all.
We can't wait to play!
